Time Freight Multisport Series Race 2

Racing hots up at Time Freight Multisport Series No.2
Sunday 21 August, Shongweni Dam, KZN

The seasons seemingly changed overnight, skipped spring and launched into summer for the second event in the Time Freight Multisport Series at Shongweni Dam, as temperatures slipped into the thirties and athletes were faced not only with the challenging terrain of this beautiful valley.
With both the Long Course events starting together it was Multi-X athlete Tyrone White who broke the tape first to claim the honours just seconds ahead of Derrin Smith with John Ntuli claiming third place. Dusi Canoe Marathon icon Eric Zondi took a worthy win in the Multisport race over 5km trail run, 20km mountain bike and 5km paddle, crossing the finish line less than three minutes ahead of rising junior talent Murray Starr with Justin Porteous placing third in a close finish for the men’s top three. Jeannie Bomford was back at the front of the women’s multisport event but was kept under pressure by young Bianca Haw who claimed second ahead of Nicky Irvine. Sarah Gray continued to hold her title in the Multi-X women’s race with Natalie Bergstrom second and newcomer Angela Egeland claiming third place.
Having cycled from his home in Marianhill, multisport stalwart Aaron Bango opted to race the Multi-X Short Course event and promptly won it ! Second place went to Siswe Mkhasibe while young Gareth Marquiss secured  third place. Mikaela Jonsson made light work of the women’s Multi-X Short Course, taking a comfortable win ahead of Jade Hattingh and Linda Gathmann. The canoe version short course was won by Jordan Pilkington while Jenna Starr claimed the women’s title.

While participants may have dug a little deeper than expected due to the heat and hilly terrain, the beauty of Msinsi’s Shongweni Dam provided ample distraction from the job at hand; filled with abundant animal and bird life, the cooling waters of the dam and cheered on by their supporters, this is what is the essence of the multisport lifestyle – getting out there and having fun ! The final event in the series comprises a full weekend of multisport madness – be sure not to miss it: 7th – 9th October.
